Saint-Martin church

Partage :

Free visit. Placed under the vocation of Saint Martin, in memory of his passage on this left bank of the Loire where he would have come after having evangelized the Morvan, the building is built on an old mound in the Romanesque period.

It has often been reworked over the centuries: the oldest parts date from the 12th century, but most of the construction dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, in particular the vaults of the choir, the chapels and the door of the façade. The walls are made of local stones: limestone from Chavroches, red sandstone from Liernolles, granite from Vaumas. The originality of the church lies in its wall-belfry: pierced by four arcatures housing the bells, one of which is the oldest in the department, it is flanked by a cylindrical tower containing a spiral staircase.
