Saint-Chamant is a beautiful village perched on the southern slopes of the Bertrande valley, which runs down from the Puy Chavaroche. It consists of a village and 11 delightful hamlets: Autrières, Auzeral, Cors, Eyfandes, Lachaze, Lavergnes, Loubejac, Pradines, Rivières, Roziers, Vistes. Saint-Chamant has a wide range of accommodation facilities, including a guest-house in the town square and various gîtes scattered around the area. The commune is a magnificent setting for a holiday. A post office and mobile shops pass through every day.
It has a rich cultural heritage, including a church with carved choir stalls. Eight of these stalls are topped with a dais featuring exceptionally colourful paintings. The paintings and sculptures date from the 15th century and are a major work of Auvergne-style Gothic. The former chapterhouse is a 15th-century architectural complex. The majestic château, on its promontory overlooking the valley, contains some very fine Aubusson tapestries, which are listed and can be viewed during visits in summer. On the village square, there is the old square tower, known as the Prallat tower, next to the church. There is also a pretty fountain, and in all the hamlets there are wash-houses, drinking troughs, bread ovens, crosses, not forgetting the residential caves in the Cors rock...
