The castle of Miremont was built during the 11th century. Three families have been living in, the family of Miremont-Mauriac, the family of Saint-Exupéry and the Bourbon-Malause family.
The castle, a border post between France (on the Auvergne side) and England (on the Limousin side), has suffered from ongoing assaults during the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. In 1575, when the fighting was at its fiercest, the famous Madeleine de Saint-Nectaire successfully led the protestants and defeated the Catholics. This made Henri 4th compliment her by saying "If I were not King, I would choose to be Madeleine de Saint-Nectaire". Partly dismantled during the 18th c., only ruins remain.
