De la dentelle aux fuseaux à la dentellerie mécanique, le musée vous fera découvrir la vie des dentellières, ainsi que les savoir-faire de cet artisanat, témoin de l’histoire de Retournac et du Velay.
The Museum of the Manufactures of Lace of Retournac is unique in France in the field of decorative arts. It preserves all the contents of a lace factory, all in its original building! The collection is impressive with more than 450 000 pieces.
You will be greeted by a lace maker as soon as you arrive at the museum. You will discover, in all conviviality, the unsuspected universe of the lace art, its beauty, its history and its techniques.
You will begin your visit on the 1st floor of the old factory with the history of lace in Europe, from the 16th century to today. You will discover rare old pieces that make the museum a key center of textile museums in France and Europe.
You will then discover the life of the lacemakers. The words of the last lacemakers of Retournac have been collected and recount their apprenticeship of bobbin lace, their life punctuated by the orders of the factories and all that constituted the daily life of these workers of the Xth century. You will also see all the importance of the lace factories in the economic and daily life of Retournac through these stories.
On the first floor, a reconstituted workshop will take you through the different stages of the manufacture of a lace, from the creation of its model to its international marketing. You will discover the role of the designer, creator of new lace models, in the manufacturing process.
Your visit will end with the old mechanical lace workshop. You will see the machines that wove the lace, in their original location.
The visit of the museum is regularly enriched by events and temporary exhibitions, demonstrations of handmade or mechanical laces, but also by initiations and lace workshops.
