The museum preserves, manages and showcases the Vichy Opera's artistic archives. Each annual exhibition, featuring programs, costumes, photographs and scenery, tells the extraordinary story of this theater since 1901.
Created by Josette Alviset and thanks to the Fondation Gabriel et Noëlle Péronnet, the Musée de l'Opéra de Vichy collects, preserves and showcases the archives of the Théâtre du Grand Casino de Vichy, now the Palais des Congrès - Opéra.
It is considered by the Bibliothèque Nationale to be one of Europe's richest collections (of a theater) in terms of the quality, quantity and rarity of the archives it holds. The Museum holds nearly six thousand posters, as many photographs, three hundred costumes, over two thousand scenographic elements (sets and set designs), all the Grand Casino theater programs from 1901 to the present day, collections of newspapers, notably the Journal de Vichy, specialized magazines and a remarkable music library (including eight thousand titles of orchestral scores).
Each year, the museum presents a thematic exhibition, organizes concerts and conferences, and hosts educational events and research visits. The museum's mission is to tell the extraordinary story of the artistic life of Vichy, once the "Summer Capital of Music".
