Le château de Montmorillon

Partage :

The Château de Montmorillon, of which only a few vestiges remain today, bears witness to the building's importance in the past. The ruins of the keep, which had a square base with 16-metre sides and a height of 5 storeys, are still imposing.

In 1256, Guillaume de Montmorillon, from the same family as the Sires de Châtel Montagne, was the first lord of the fortress, which commanded the passage through this mountainous region. In 1375, Château de Montmorillon probably belonged by marriage to Jean de Chauvigny de Blot. In 1450, it was sold to Roffec de Balzac d'Entraigues, seneschal of Agenois, son of Agnès de Chavannes. In 1503, we find another member of the de Montmorillon family in the person of Péronnelle de Montmorillon, who held the Château d'Arfeuilles in fief. Montmorillon then passed into the hands of high-ranking royal officials, but was destroyed by Richelieu's troops pursuing its owner, Philippe de Guillard, for the crime of counterfeiting money. In 1718, the land, which had passed to Paul de Valadoux, chevalier, marquis d'Arcy, was sold to Messire Gilles Brunet d'Evry, seigneur de la Palisse and Châtel-Montagne, and remained in the family until the 19th century.(1)
