The must-do from Murat! This walk will take you up 2 basalt necks, the rock of Chastel-sur-Murat and the Romanesque chapel of St-Antoine, as well as the rock of Bonnevie and its virgin to enjoy panoramic views.
Discover the medieval town of Murat and the Maison de la Faune (former sub-prefecture building housing a remarkable collection of naturalized animals). From the summits of the two volcanic necks, enjoy a breathtaking view over the rooftops of Murat, the Alagnon valley and the Monts du Cantal.
Departure - Place de l'Hôtel de Ville.
1- Cross the square and turn left up Avenue des 12 & 24 juin 1944. Take the first right up to the foot of the church. Go around it to the left (Place du Planol). After the bend, turn right at the crossroads marking the entrance to a housing estate. Drive up to Ezoldebeau and join the D39.
2- Cross the main road and take the street going up opposite (rue de la Pinatelle). Go past a water reservoir and turn right onto the track between the house and the meadow.
3- At the next crossroads, turn left and pass the Giou farm. Continue on this track, pass through a gate, and reach the next crossroads (view of the Monts du Cantal and the Neck de Chastel).
4- At this crossroads, turn left onto the wide track leading to Chastel.
5- In the village of Chastel, turn left, passing the houses backing onto the Chastel rock. The path descends along the rock on the right, crossing a scree slope.
6- Cross the Canadian pass and turn left alongside a ruined farmhouse. Continue on this path and go through two more gates. At the last gate, turn right downhill and pick up another track on the right. Descend to a crow's-foot and turn left into the hamlet of L'Héritier. Cross the D3 and turn left. Follow the road for 100 m, then turn right and left. Take a path that runs along the right-hand side of a housing estate below. At the waste sorting site, turn right and cross the crossroads (off PR, climb to Rocher de Bonnevie, 15 min. return).
7- After crossing the crossroads, take the track on the left that leads back down to Murat. Take rue de Lavergne, then the church and town hall.
