In 1586, Dame Jacqueline d'Aumont gave the Confraternity of Penitents a home close to the Cathedral. During the French Revolution, the butchers' corporation took up residence in the chapel, using it to store and dry leather.
Today, the butchers' corporation has a mass celebrated in the chapel each year.
The site contains a series of large-format paintings (2m x 1.35m) recounting episodes in the life of the Virgin Mary. The ceiling features 75 coffers dating from the 17th century with a central picture showing the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Each year the Confraternity of Penitents takes part in a procession to the chapel on Good Friday. They carry the instruments and emblems of the Passion, which can be seen in the chapel, as well as confraternity staffs and processional lamps.
