This sensitive natural area owes its remarkable character to the presence of a large number of beech trees, sometimes in rows, with tortuous shapes that are almost 400 years old.
Their distinctive appearance is the result of an ancestral hedge maintenance technique: plessage. One of the alignments at Chemin des Creux, with its monumental trees, is one of the oldest remnants of a plessé hedge in the Monts de la Madeleine. But the ENS is also home to other beech trees of this type, such as those at Pré Jouancet and Pierre Châtel... You will certainly come across other Beech trees on your outings to St Nicolas des Biefs, as the inventory is not yet exhaustive.
La Pierre-Châtel, a rocky escarpment and picturesque spot, offers a striking landscape and completes this area. Hiking trails are also available from this site, which is also equipped for rock climbing.
