City of Mauriac

Partage :

Going back 2000 years ago, Mauriac is recognized as one of the oldest cities in the Cantal. It developed in the 9thc. when the St Pierre monastery was founded and given a royal status.

It turned into a pilgrimage centre, attracting numerous pilgrims. The Basilique Notre-Dame des Miracles followed in the 11thc. and big local markets started taking place. Mauriac kept growing through the Middle Ages, and in the 17th and 18thc. became the headquarters of public institutions in the Nord Cantal what is now known as the Sous-Prefecture. With one of the first Jesuits college of France founded in the 16thc. Mauriac is an ancient city that has a lot to offer. Picturesque streets, old fortifications.
