Château de Chouvigny

Partage :

Fortified castle from the 13th century, located on a rocky outcrop on the way out of the Sioule Gorge. It belonged to the Lords of Chouvigny, the La Fayette family and finally to the Duke of Morny. Restored during the 20th century, this castle can be visited only during the summer.

The fortified castle of Chouvigny is one of the last examples of military architecture of the Middle Ages, in particular with the cavalry court and the archers in carp tail perfectly preserved in the watchtower. It is also the former home of illustrious figures such as Madame de La Fayette or the Duc de Morny. For almost 8 centuries, the castle of Chouvigny has watched like a sentinel over the Sioule Gorge, of which it is one of the tourist jewels. Visits give access to the oratory, to the stately home housing a collection of medieval weapons and armors, to the hall of honor, to the treasure tower and to the watchtower, as well as to the various terraces with panoramic views over the Sioule river.
