The village and gardens of Champeix

Partage :

Dominated by the Marchidial chapel (now an exposition hall), Champeix spreads itself over the banks of the Couze Chambon river. Climb up the narrow streets of the Marchidial and admire the gardens and the panoramic view.

Built in a meander of the Couze Chambon, between hillsides planted with vines and terraced orchards, the village of Champeix has a southern and wine-growing atmosphere. The winegrower's houses are brightly coloured and the roofs of red tiles highlighted with inconvenience.
The different districts underline the history of the city. The Marchidial district, located at the foot of the castle, is the historic district. On the right bank of the Couze, the opening of the road from Besse to Clermont in the 18th century encouraged the development of the districts of Place du Pré and Quai d'Aubary. In the 18th century, Champeix became the capital of the Marquisate of Tourzel. We know Mrs. de Tourzel who was the governess of the children of Louis XVI.
Today, the multitude of gardens, whether ornamental or vegetable, has earned the city the title of City of Gardens.
